Guggi was born in 1959 in the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin. The second of
ten children, he began drawing and painting with a passion at a very early
age. A rebel then and a rebel now, he shied away from formal art training
and embraced the punk movement at the age of seventeen. He was a founder
member of The Virgin Prunes, the cult Dublin band, which combined music
and performance with the visual arts. In 1986 Guggi returned to fulltime
painting. In 1997 he was commissioned to do the art for the Clarence Hotel,
Dublin where his work is still on permanent exhibition. He has continued
to develop at a phenomenal rate and his paintings are found in many major
collections throughout the world. Guggi's most recent exhibition was at
the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York. He is married to the artist Sibylle
Ungers. |
