Tony O'Malley, born in Callan, County Kilkenny in 1913, began painting in 1945 when he was confined to hospital during an illness. He continued to paint in his spare time while working as a bank official but devoted his full attention to painting after leaving his job in 1958. He settled in Cornwall in 1960 but returned to County Kilkenny thirty years later. In 1973 he married Canadian-born artist Jane Harris. A member of Aosdána, he was elected to the position of Saoi in 1993. His work can be found in public and private collections throughout Ireland and the rest of Europe and the United States. |
